Chapter 2: Recovery 1490

Pain lanced up my back, groaning softly I opened my eyes a little to see Damian standing nearby with a doctor.

“Will she be alright?” Damian kept wringing the end of his robe.

“I don’t know, she’s lost quite a lot of blood and the wound is quite large. I can try to help her, but I don’t know if she’ll make it.”

Damian clenched a hand into a fist. “You’ll save her or it will be the last thing you ever do!” he got a murderous look in his eyes.

“Alright, alright, I’ll do my best.” The doctor started to walk over towards me.

“You better!” Damian growled.

“Damian… what’s… What’s happening?” I tried to sit up but gasped as the movement caused more pain to lance across my back.

“Easy Miranda, I’ll tell you all about it later. Right now the doctor here is going to help you.” He placed one hand on my uninjured shoulder reassuringly.

“Okay Damian, I trust you.” I stopped moving and just lay still as the pain subsided to a dull throb.

The doctor walked over and started to clean the wound, making me wince at his touch. “I’ll have to sew it up to help it heal faster.”

“Do, it.” I was starting to feel a little sick from the constant throb of pain.

“As you say mandona.” He held an open jar next to my face. “Inhale this, it will help.”

I did as told and inhaled the aroma and started to feel dizzy, just before passing out.

Everything was so dark and cold, but then I saw Antonino and ran towards him and hugged him, tears running down my face.

“An… Antonino….” I sobbed into his chest.

“Shhh, shhh, it’s alright Miranda, it’s alright. Everything’s going to be fine.” He held me close.

I started to calm down, but something didn’t feel right. ‘Why was Antonino here? Was I dead?’

I looked up at him, slightly confused. “Antonino, am I dead?”

“No, you’re not dead Miranda. You still have a huge life in front of you, you still have a family.”

“Family? But, you and mother and father and sister are dead, how can I have a family?”

“I know many things you don’t little one.” He smiled kindly and squeezed me gently. “You’re going to have your own family one day little one, you will have your own family.”

“Will I see you again Antonino?” I looked up at him sadly.

“You may not see me again for a very long time. But I will see you, I will be watching over you.” He placed a kiss on my forehead. “But it’s time for you to wake up now.”

“Antonino, please, don’t leave me again…” Everything was starting to fade.

“I’m sorry Miranda, but you must go now.”

I saw Damian’s face come into focus slowly as I started to wake up.

“Miranda, are you okay? You were crying.”

I looked up at him. “I’m… I’m fine… really…”

He sighed “If you say so.” I saw it in his eyes that he didn’t believe me.

I squeezed his hand gently. “Don’t worry about me Damian, I’m fine, really.”

He smiled weakly and kissed my cheek gently. “I’ll be here if you need me.”

“Thank you, Damian, for everything.” I smiled at him, holding his hand close as I fell asleep again.

The next few weeks passed quickly enough but not fast enough for my liking.

Damian came to visit me as often as he could but that was only twice a week at the most so I was alone a lot of the time.

I placed the book back down on the bedside table and looked up at the celling. There really was nothing I could do until my back was fully healed.

Hearing the door open I looked over to see the third best man in the brotherhood walking towards me.

“Are you Miranda?” he sounded friendly.

“I am, may I ask who you are?”

“I am Nate, at your service milady.” He smiled.

“So, what are you doing here?”

“Ezio wanted me to give you a message, he wants you to go with him to pick up a new novice.”

“When am I to go?”

“You leave tomorrow morning. And when you get back I’m going to train you.” He smiled again.

“You’re… you’re going to train me?!” I was shocked.

“I am.” He smiled.

“Thank you master.”

“Please, just call me Nate.”

“I will.”

He smiled “Thank you, Miranda.” He walked out of the room and closed the door behind him.

I don’t know why he wanted to train me, but I knew he was going to a good master.

Standing up slowly and stretching, I picked up my pack and placed some clothes and my books in it.

I smiled when I felt someone wrap their arms around my waist. “Hey Damian.” I placed a kiss on his cheek.

“Hello Miranda, I see you’re feeling better.” He smiled and kissed my cheek. “You already to go?”

“Yeah, I’m ready.” I smiled at him.

“Then let’s go. And don’t worry about Ezio either, I already talked to him about it.” He wrapped one arm around my shoulder and steered me out the door.

We left the tower were the other Assassins were staying and walked through Rome for a little while, both of us enjoying the other’s company.

“So, where is this house of yours Damian?”

He smiled. “You’ll just have to wait and see.”

“Aw, Damian.”

“Don’t worry, were almost there.” He kissed my cheek gently.

“Damian…. I have something I want to tell you….” I blushed a little.

“And what might it be?” he looked at me.

“I… I… I love you Damian….” I blushed and looked down at my boots.

He smiled and gently placed one hand on my cheek, lifting my face back towards his. “I love you too Miranda.” He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead.

I smiled and kissed his cheek. “I wanted to tell you before, but I didn’t know how.”

“It’s okay Miranda, it really is.” he wrapped one arm around my shoulders and pulled me close.

I lay my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes.

Damian picked me up gently and carried me the rest of the way to his house, with myself falling asleep in his arms.

Damian chuckled quietly as he lay Miranda on his bed.

He could do anything he wanted to her, heck he could do whatever he wanted with her, but he never did and never would.

‘No, I will never do that to her, I will never hurt her in anyway…’ He sighed quietly and walked into the kitchen.

‘I do love her, but… she is not the one for me… I can feel it, every time I see her smile, every time I hear her laugh… I am reminded of what happened that one day so many years ago, the day that I fell in love…’

Damian sat on the bench as he remembered a painful memory, tears coming to his eyes.

“Why Maria…? Why…?” He placed one hand over his face, as tears started to fall freely.

He cried quietly for some time, for a life that he had failed to protect.

He never heard Miranda walk up to him and wrap her arms around him, bringing him into a hug.

I held him close and comforted him, I didn’t know why he was crying but I wanted to help him.
